Yoko Nishikubo

Hi, everyone!

I’m currently living in the Bay Area, California where I consider my second home town. After living 1 year in NY and in San Diego, I moved to San Francisco, California from Kagoshima, Japan in 1997. The first time I saw kiteboarding was sometime in 2002 at Waddell Creek during motorcycle ride on Highway 1. Prior year, I was taking AFF skydiving courses and was getting into snowboarding but due to neck injuries during snowboarding, I had to quit all sports for 1.5 years. I was practicing yoga for a while but ever since I saw kiting at Waddell, I knew what my next challenge was—kiteboarding!

My first lesson was in June 2003, but I wasn’t kiting regularly until I participated in the Girls Kite Camp in Ishigaki Island, Japan in December 2004 by life changing inspiration, Cabrinha rider, Tomoko-san. During the camp, not only I learned basic maneuver but shared a lot of fun with other stoked girls, which is one of my best kiting experiences so far.
Since then, I’ve been kiting quite a lot and it has been great! I have changed my work schedule so that I can kite during weekdays, and almost any windy weekends I enjoy kiting at my favorite spots such as Alameda, Sherman Island, and 3rd Ave. My favorite sessions include good winds at Sherman on Vegas 8, crazy storm winds at Alameda on Nitro 6.5 with my Underground FLX 122.

As I have never done any wind sports in the past, I must say this sport is fairly new to me. I am just about to learn some tricks now and there are so many things to learn and it’s never ending! I believe kiteboarding is such a rewarding experience by meeting new people, sharing good times with friends. By promoting the Kite Chicks, I hope to meet more female riders and help more girls to join this wonderful sport as it’s always guys left on the beach when I am done at the end of the day. I believe with safe practices and good attitudes, kiteboarding is such a fun sport that girls can easily enjoy. Besides, the Kite Chicks apparel makes us look great! I am very happy to join the team and help promoting to increase female population in the kiteboarding scene.
